PROFESSIONAL FAQS: DOES HOMEMADE TOMATO SOUP INCLUDE A LOT OF POTASSIUM?

Tomatoes naturally contain approximately 230mg of potassium per 100g which is only a small portion of the recommended dietary intake of around 3000 to 3500mg per day. It would depend on what other ingredients are added to your homemade tomato soup to determine whether it is a lot of potassium. If you were trying to cook a high potassium tomato soup, try adding blended sweet potatoes, legumes or spinach. This will also increase your nutrient intake of a wide range of vitamins and minerals as well as potassium.

The average cup of tomatoes contains roughly 544 mg of potassium, while the average adult requires 4700 mg of potassium daily. While tomatoes are a good source of potassium, the processing method may affect the amount that it contains. Heat at certain levels can reduce the amount of potassium within the tomatoes. A cold tomato soup would have higher levels of potassium than a hot tomato soup would have, though both have a sufficient amount for a meal.
